How to Install Skirting Boards

Skirting boards add a touch of elegance to your rooms while also serving a practical purpose by covering the gap between your walls and flooring. There are a few different ways to install skirting boards, depending on the type of walls you have and your personal preference.

Installing Skirting Boards for Plaster Walls

  1. Measure and mark the wall: Measure the length of each wall where you want to install the skirting boards. Make sure to measure from the floor to the desired height. Mark the wall with a pencil.
  2. Cut the skirting boards: Cut the skirting boards to size using a miter saw or a hand saw. Make sure to cut the boards at a 45-degree angle for corners.
  3. Apply adhesive: Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to the back of each skirting board.
  4. Attach the skirting boards to the wall: Press the skirting boards firmly against the wall, making sure they are level.
  5. Nail or screw the skirting boards in place: Once the adhesive is dry, nail or screw the skirting boards to the wall. Use a nail gun or a cordless drill.
  6. Caulk the gaps: Caulk the gaps between the skirting boards and the wall to create a clean finish.

Installing Skirting Boards for Brick Walls

  1. Measure and mark the wall: Measure and mark the wall as described above.
  2. Apply a backing board: Before attaching the skirting boards, apply a backing board to the wall. This will provide a solid surface for the nails or screws to grip. You can use a thin plywood or MDF board.
  3. Attach the skirting boards: Attach the skirting boards to the backing board using nails or screws.
  4. Caulk the gaps: Caulk the gaps between the skirting boards and the wall.

Installing Skirting Boards Without Using Nails

If you don't want to use nails or screws, you can install skirting boards using construction adhesive. This is a good option for plaster walls, as it will not damage the wall surface.

  1. Prepare the wall: Clean the wall surface to remove any dust or dirt.
  2. Apply adhesive: Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to the back of each skirting board.
  3. Attach the skirting boards to the wall: Press the skirting boards firmly against the wall, making sure they are level.
  4. Support the skirting boards: While the adhesive is drying, support the skirting boards with temporary braces to prevent them from sagging.
  5. Remove the braces: Once the adhesive is dry, remove the braces.

Skirting Board Installation Tips:

  • Use a level to make sure the skirting boards are straight.
  • Fill any nail holes or screw holes with caulk.
  • Paint the skirting boards to match your decor.

By following these steps, you can easily install skirting boards in your Australian home.
