Installing floorboards can dramatically transform a room. Whether you're laying them over joists, concrete, or plywood, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a professional finish.

Laying Floorboards on Joists

  1. Prepare the Joists: Ensure the joists are level and spaced evenly. If necessary, install additional joists or shims to level the floor.
  2. Install Underlay: Lay a moisture barrier and soundproofing underlay over the joists.
  3. Start Laying: Begin laying the floorboards, starting from one corner of the room. Secure the first few boards with nails or screws.
  4. Interlocking System: Use the tongue-and-groove system to connect subsequent boards.
  5. Expansion Gap: Leave a small expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
  6. Finishing Touches: Install skirting boards to hide the expansion gap and complete the look.

Installing Floorboards on Concrete

  1. Prepare the Concrete: Ensure the concrete is clean, dry, and level. Fill any cracks or holes with a concrete repair compound.
  2. Install a Moisture Barrier: Lay a moisture barrier over the concrete to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Install Underlay: Install an underlayment specifically designed for concrete floors.
  4. Lay the Floorboards: Start laying the floorboards, securing them to the underlay using nails or screws.
  5. Expansion Gap: Leave an expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
  6. Finishing Touches: Install skirting boards to hide the expansion gap.

Installing Hardwood Flooring on Plywood

  1. Prepare the Plywood: Ensure the plywood is securely fastened to the subfloor and is level.
  2. Install Underlay: Lay a moisture barrier and soundproofing underlay over the plywood.
  3. Lay the Floorboards: Start laying the floorboards, securing them to the plywood using nails or screws.
  4. Interlocking System: Use the tongue-and-groove system to connect subsequent boards.
  5. Expansion Gap: Leave a small expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.
  6. Finishing Touches: Install skirting boards to hide the expansion gap.

Additional Tips:

  • Acclimate the Wood: Before installation, allow the floorboards to acclimate to the room's humidity and temperature.
  • Hire a Professional: If you're unsure about any step or encounter difficulties, consider hiring a professional floor installer.
  • Use the Right Tools: Invest in quality tools like a flooring nailer or stapler.
  • Safety First: Always wear safety gear, such as gloves and goggles, when working with tools.
  • Clean Up: Clean up any debris or mess after each step.

By following these steps and taking your time, you can achieve a beautiful and durable floorboard installation. Remember, proper planning and preparation are key to a successful project. If you need help from one of our handymen:
