How to Fix a Leaking Tap

A leaking tap can be a frustrating and wasteful problem. Fortunately, with a few simple tools and some basic know-how, you can often fix it yourself.

Common Causes of Leaking Taps

  1. Worn-out washers: This is a common cause of leaks, especially in older taps. The washer is a rubber or plastic disc that seals the tap when it's turned off. Over time, it can become worn or damaged, allowing water to leak past it.
  2. Corroded or damaged parts: Taps can become corroded due to exposure to minerals and chemicals in the water. This can damage the internal parts of the tap, leading to leaks.
  3. Loose or damaged fittings: The fittings that connect the tap to the water supply can become loose or damaged, causing leaks.
  4. Mineral deposits: Over time, mineral deposits can build up inside the tap, restricting water flow and causing leaks.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Replacement washers (if needed)
  • Plumber's tape
  • Grease

Steps to Fix a Leaking Tap

  1. Turn off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valves for the tap you want to repair. These are usually located under the sink or near the water meter. Turn the valves clockwise until they stop to shut off the water supply.
  2. Release pressure: Open the tap to release any remaining pressure in the pipes.
  3. Remove the handle: Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the handle in place. Carefully lift the handle off the tap.
  4. Remove the packing nut: Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the packing nut, which is located behind the handle.
  5. Remove the old washer: Once the packing nut is removed, you should be able to access the old washer. Carefully remove it and inspect it for damage.
  6. Replace the washer: If the washer is damaged, replace it with a new one. Make sure the new washer is the correct size and shape for your tap.
  7. Reassemble the tap: Reinstall the packing nut, tightening it securely with the adjustable wrench. Replace the handle and tighten the screws.
  8. Turn on the water supply: Slowly turn the shut-off valves counterclockwise to turn the water supply back on. Check for leaks around the tap and the packing nut.
